Whitford’s 4 Treys Pace Chargers in Blowout of Kishwaukee

The Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team put together a huge first quarter and blew out Kishwaukee 60-38 on Saturday afternoon at John M. Lewis Gymnasium, giving the Chargers a season sweep of the Kougars.

KEY MOMENTS

  • Sandburg (11-13, 4-2) opened up a 29-6 lead after the first, closing the period on a 24-2 burst. The Chargers then scored six straight to open the second quarter before the Kougars (7-18, 2-5) ended a 10½-minute scoring drought.
  • Sandburg had 10 of its 11 players record a field goal in the first half as the Chargers led 37-10. Sandburg’s biggest lead came at 59-26 in the fourth quarter.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Freshman guard Sophie Whitford (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) put together her second straight double-digit outing to lead all Chargers with 14 points. Whitford went 4 of 11 from the floor (all from 3-point range) and has made nine 3s in the last two games.

OTHER TOP CHARGERS

  • Freshman Cora Neal (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville) had 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting and added two assist and two steals.
  • Sophomore guard Jordan Price (Fulton, Ill./Fulton) had six points and a team-best six assists.
  • Freshman forwards Yvonne Mixon (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) and Kennedy Jackson (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) each grabbed seven rebounds.

GETTING DEFENSIVE
Sandburg’s 38 points allowed matched its best defensive outing of the season (vs. Waubonsee on Nov. 10). The Chargers held Kishwaukee to 30 percent shooting (14 for 47) and kept the Kougars to 0 of 12 from beyond the arc.

FOR THE KOUGARS
Rashel Robinson led all players with 16 points.

UP NEXT
The Chargers will host Black Hawk at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday for Sophomore Night.
